The MOTOTRBO R5 is Motorola's sealed digital portable, and the specification that decides most purchases is the sealing: Motorola rates it IP67, dust-tight and waterproof.

This is the non-display model, which Motorola specifies at 64 channels on 400 to 512 MHz. No screen is the right choice for a fleet that runs a fixed channel plan, because there is nothing for a user to get lost in and nothing to break. Where a crew reassigns channels through the day, the limited keypad model carries a 1.5 inch display and 256 channels instead.

Battery life runs to 30 hours on Motorola's figures, with a slim 2,200 mAh IMPRES pack (PMNN4888) or a 3,200 mAh pack (PMNN4889). The radio measures 122 x 56 x 35 mm and weighs 269 g with the slim battery. Audio uses Motorola's SINC+ and AI-trained noise suppression, which is what keeps a transmission intelligible next to running plant rather than merely loud.

It also carries Wi-Fi on 2.4 and 5.0 GHz with WPA3 security and Bluetooth 5.2, so channel plans can be pushed over the air instead of radio by radio. Motorola includes five years of hardware repair.

This configuration is supplied with a remote speaker microphone, which moves the speaker and transmit button to the shoulder so the radio stays holstered.

Who it is for

The MOTOTRBO R5 is Motorola's compact digital portable for teams that work around noise: Motorola positions it on loud, clear audio that cuts through background noise, status indications a user can read without stopping, and a body sealed to IP67 and tested to MIL-STD 810. CMI lists it for warehouses, logistics, operations and hospital teams. This is the non-display model: 64 channels in 4 zones, 3 programmable buttons, no screen to read or break. It is the UHF model, which suits buildings and built-up sites; read UHF vs VHF two-way radios if the band choice is still open, and analog vs digital two-way radios if digital radio is new to the site. This configuration adds a remote speaker microphone, which moves the speaker and transmit button to the shoulder while the radio stays holstered.

Size, weight and battery

  • Battery and runtime: supplied with the slim 2200 mAh IMPRES Li-Ion battery (PMNN4888): Motorola rates 20 hours digital or 15.5 hours analog on a 5-5-90 duty cycle at maximum transmitter power with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off, and notes that observed runtimes vary. The 3200 mAh PMNN4889 battery raises the rating to 30 hours digital or 23 hours analog.
  • Size and weight: 122 x 56 x 35 mm (4.82 x 2.2 x 1.37 in) and 269 g (9.5 oz) with the slim battery; 122 x 56 x 41 mm (4.82 x 2.2 x 1.6 in) and 301 g (10.6 oz) with the 3200 mAh battery.
  • Power and band: 4 W high and 1 W low on 400 to 512 MHz, 12.5 or 25 kHz channel spacing, DMR Tier II digital and analog.
  • Audio: 1 W rated and 3 W maximum audio output; 101 phon at 30 cm by default and, in digital mode, up to 106 phon at 30 cm with the user-selectable audio profile; SINC+ single-microphone noise cancellation and AI-trained noise suppression.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 5 (802.11 a, b, g, n and ac) on 2.4 and 5 GHz with WPA3 and WPA2, 64 SSIDs; Bluetooth 5.2, class 2, 10 m; over-the-air programming over DMR and software updates over Wi-Fi; slim GCAI accessory port.
  • Safety features: emergency button and lone worker; canned text messaging (send only on the non-display model).
  • Protection: IP67 against dust and water immersion, tested to MIL-STD 810 C through H; radio operating temperature -22 F to 140 F (-30 C to +60 C), battery minimum -20 C.
  • Service: Motorola includes hardware repair, technical support and software updates for 5 years.

Licence

This radio operates on licensed business frequencies. An FCC business radio licence (Part 90) is required to transmit; CMI can point you at the process when you order.

Accessories that fit

CMI connector code: M15 (the R5 slim GCAI port). Motorola's R5 data sheet names the PMNN4888 2200 mAh and PMNN4889 3200 mAh IMPRES batteries. CMI lists its own USB-C replacement battery for Motorola R5 radios. Ask CMI for an earpiece, headset or speaker microphone for this radio by connector code M15.

Part number

CMI part number: R5-U-RSM. Related configurations: the same radio without the microphone, with the 3200 mAh battery and the VHF model with microphone. See CMI's Motorola collection, two-way radio collection and warehouse and logistics radios.
