Open PDF covers the model family, not this configuration

The MOTOTRBO R7 is the most heavily sealed radio in Motorola's commercial range. Motorola tests it to IP66 and IP68, which covers two hours of submersion as well as high-pressure water jets from any direction, and the screen itself is ruggedised against drops.

This configuration is the UHF model with a full keypad. A full keypad suits a fleet where users enter contacts or text; a no-keypad radio is the tougher choice for a crew that only ever changes channel, with fewer controls to press by accident through a glove.

Audio is where the R7 separates itself. Motorola pairs multiple microphones with adaptive noise cancelling and quotes a loudness of 102 phons, so it is built for the sites where a radio is normally unusable. The display runs 320 x 240 pixels behind the keypad.

Connectivity covers Wi-Fi 5 on 2.4 and 5 GHz with Bluetooth 5.2, so programming and updates run over the air. IMPRES self-calibrating batteries remove the reconditioning downtime that ordinary packs create, and IMPRES chargers extend the charge cycles each battery delivers.

Who it is for

The MOTOTRBO R7 is Motorola's rugged digital portable for sites where a radio is normally hard to hear: Motorola quotes 102 phons of loudness out of the box, an extra loud profile at 107 phons, adaptive dual-microphone noise suppression for machinery and stadium noise, and feedback suppression for users standing close together. The housing is sealed to IP66 and IP68 and was designed to resist disinfectants and decontamination substances, which is why CMI lists it for hospital and medical-center teams as well as warehouses, logistics and operations. This is the UHF model, which suits buildings and built-up sites; it has a full keypad, for users who enter contacts or text. Read UHF vs VHF two-way radios if the band choice is still open, and analog vs digital two-way radios if digital radio is new to the site.

Build, audio and connectivity

  • Protection: tested to IP66 and IP68, which Motorola describes as dust-tight and protected against immersion to 2 metres for 2 hours and against high-pressure water jets from any direction; designed and tested to MIL-STD-810.
  • Audio: front and back microphones with adaptive dual-microphone noise suppression and automatic acoustic feedback suppression; 102 phons out of the box and 107 phons on the extra loud profile, which also runs on supported remote speaker microphones.
  • Display: 2.4 inch QVGA 320 x 240 pixel colour display.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi on 2.4 and 5 GHz and Bluetooth 5.2; over-the-air programming and updating via Wi-Fi; compatible with every type of MOTOTRBO system, from a single site to a national network.
  • Batteries: Li-Ion IMPRES self-calibrating batteries, with IMPRES chargers for one or up to six batteries at a time.
  • Management: large emergency button; remote kill and stun; Motorola refers users to the R7 user manual for the list of approved disinfectants.
