Motorola 53865 HMN9038 Over the Ear Headset Boom Mic

Motorola lists the 53865 as a headset with a swivel boom microphone, and it appears in the accessory list for both the RM Series and the RDX Series portables.

A swivel boom is the practical difference from a fixed one. The microphone moves to either side, so the same headset suits a left or right ear user without anybody swapping hardware, and it folds out of the way when the wearer is not talking.

A boom microphone also sits at a fixed distance from the mouth. That is what keeps transmit level steady on a site where a hand-held microphone would drift closer and further as the user works.
