Who it is for

The F52D and F62D are compact IDAS radios for teams that want a small, loud digital portable, and the UL versions are for plants, mills, utilities and fuel sites in North America that need a UL-listed intrinsically safe radio in the same body. Pick VHF (F52D) for open ground and UHF (F62D) for buildings.

The UL-listed versions

  • Approvals: the IC-F52D-UL and IC-F62D-UL are listed to ANSI/UL 121201 as intrinsically safe for Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D; Class II, Division 1, Groups E, F and G; and Class III, temperature code T3C. They are listed as non-incendive for Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C and D. These ratings apply only with the Icom BP-292UL battery fitted.
  • Size: 2.2 x 3.6 x 1.3 in (56 x 92 x 34.1 mm) with the BP-292UL, projections not included.
  • Weight: about 9.5 oz (270 g) with the BP-292UL and MBB-3 clip.
  • Battery: BP-292UL, 2010 mAh typical, about 10 hours per charge; the BC-226 or BC-227 charger refills it in 2.7 hours, and Icom states the charger must not be used in an explosive atmosphere.
  • Protection: IP67, IP66, IP55 and IP54 ratings; MIL-STD-810G; operating range of -4 to +140 F (-20 to +60 C).
  • In the box: BP-292UL battery and MBB-3 belt clip (contents may differ by version). The standard F52D and F62D use their own batteries and chargers; ask CMI for the figures for the version you are buying.

Licence

This radio operates on licensed business frequencies. An FCC business radio licence (Part 90) is required to transmit; CMI can point you at the process when you order.

Accessories that fit

CMI connector code: I4 (Icom 14-pin). Icom's UL brochure names the FA-SC57VS stubby antenna (VHF, 160 to 174 MHz) and the FA-SC73US stubby antenna (UHF, 450 to 490 MHz) among the antenna options, and both are on CMI's site. The HM-184UL speaker microphone, the BP-292UL battery and the BC-226 and BC-227 chargers are not listed online; ask CMI by part number. For a hazardous location, use only the accessories the approval covers.

Part number

CMI part number: 9242. Icom's ATEX and IECEx intrinsically safe radio for sites certified to the European scheme is the IC-F3201DEX / F4201DEX; the larger IDAS radio with a colour display is the IC-F3400D / F4400D. See the rest of CMI's Icom collection.
