The CLP1010e is the single-channel radio in Motorola's CLP Series, and the series exists to solve a specific problem: a radio that a front-of-house team will actually wear all day. Motorola describes a sleek design small enough to fit in the palm of the hand, and the numbers bear it out at 3.35 oz (95 g) with the standard Li-Ion battery.

One channel is the point of this model, not a limitation of it. A restaurant floor, a store, a hotel front desk needs everyone on the same channel and nobody able to wander off it by accident. Where more than one workgroup is involved, the eight-channel CLP1080e is the sibling model.

Audio is where the CLP differs most from a conventional business radio. Motorola specifies audio output of 10 mW into 16 ohms, which is earpiece level rather than loudspeaker level: this is a radio designed to be worn with an audio accessory, in the quiet, discreet way a customer-facing team needs. A glow ring around the push-to-talk button reports the active channel and radio status at a glance, and channels can carry spoken names, either Motorola's pre-defined voice prompts or custom ones recorded for the site.

Specification: UHF, one channel at 12.5 kHz, 1 watt on high power and 0.5 watts on low, receiver sensitivity of -122 dBm at 12 dB SINAD. The standard BT90 1800 mAh Li-Ion battery gives up to 18 hours at a 5/5/90 duty cycle with the transmitter on high power, which Motorola notes is an average and will vary in use. The radio is rated IP54 for dust and water and tested to Military Standard 810 C, D, E, F, G and H, across an operating range of -30 C to +60 C.
